Today I’m going to tell you about what the industry expects from you and how you can become a successful professional.

Professional Practices

The term ‘professional practice’ refers to the conduct and work of someone from a particular profession. A profession is any job that requires a certain level of education, skill, or training. There is typically a required standard of competency, knowledge, or education that must be demonstrated. Professional bodies may set standards of ethics, performance, competence, insurance, training and so on that must be met to remain within the profession. These are typically set out in a code of conduct.

Examples of professional standards include:

Accountability — takes responsibility for their actions.

Confidentiality — keeps all sensitive information private and away from those who shouldn’t have access to it

Fiduciary duty — places the needs of clients before their own.

Honesty — always being truthful.

Integrity — having strong moral principles.

Law-abiding — follows all governing laws in the jurisdictions they perform activities.

Loyalty — remain committed to their profession.

Objectivity — not swayed or influenced by biases.

Transparency — revealing all relevant information and not concealing anything.

Industry Expectations

The industry Expectations vary with the industry as well as the experience and position. For example, what the industry expects from an engineer is different from what it expects from a doctor. At the same time, the industry expectations for a fresh graduate and an experienced professional also differ even in the same industry. When hiring a fresher, companies usually know that they have to be trained both in the classroom and on the job and mentored for at least three to six months before they become productive. Companies expect that the person will be enthusiastic and learn as much as possible. In addition, they want to make sure the employee stays with them for at least a period of two to three years. In contrast, Most companies expect experienced candidates to be mature and understand what the organization’s key goals are and how they can contribute towards them. They look for people who want to grow with the organization and take on more responsibility. As the number of years of experience increases, candidates are expected to possess refined skills such as decision-making, delegation skills, and team-leading skills.

Employers look for managerial capabilities in an experienced candidate and how he is going to make a change in his given role which turns out to be an added advantage to the company.

Other than these there are also some other factors that an employer expects in a candidate.

Communication skills

This is one of the most critical skills that a fresher should possess and every step should be towards improving these skills. Industry practitioners in recruitment will give the main focus to candidates who are good at communication skills.

Ability to multi-task

The ability to manage multiple assignments at a time is the need of the hour. Every employer today wishes for a candidate who can handle multiple assignments, prioritize them correctly, divide time proportionately between them and ultimately meet all the deadlines effectively.

Flexibility

The ability to adapt to changing work environment and work assignments is critical in today’s context.

Analytical and Research Skills

A professional should have the skills to assess a situation, seek multiple perspectives, gather relevant information, identify key issues and analyze the solutions effectively. All these skills can make a better problem solver which is extremely helpful for todays’ employees.

Computer Skills

Despite the industry, every job today requires a basic understanding of computers. Proficiency with technology and its applications are absolutely crucial in today’s information age.
